MEU Programme Mission

Aiming to define a vision for improved European Union governance on ethnic and national minority issues, the specific purpose of the MEU Programme is to conduct research and analysis on existing and proposed European Union policies and programmes relating to ethnic and national minority issues. With the mission to

(1)   heighten the awareness of gaps and deficits in European Union governance with regard to ethnic and national minorities,

(2)   enhance the capacity of these minorities to participate in the design of European Union governance and the capacity of member states’ agencies to address minority issues within the parameters of European Union governance,

(3)   improve academic analysis of specific programmes in European Union governance that bear on ethnic and national minority issues,

(4)   increase and improve knowledge of cross-cutting issues related to ethnic and national minorities as well as

(5)   encourage greater mainstreaming of minority rights in European Union programming.


The research methodology will be multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary: European studies, political science, law and international relations, political economy and sociology. Project approaches: Networks of Excellence, thematic networks, policy-oriented research, action-oriented dissemination, publications and electronically available information.
